Half of the week (3 days) would involve 3 days exploring Orkney with Steve Sankey of Orcadian Wildlife: expect to see seabirds; birds of prey (especially hen harriers); long-tailed duck and great-northern divers in stunning summer plumage; wild flowers; and seals – and of course Orkney’s famous 5,000 year old Neolithic monuments such as Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar. The other half of the week (3 days) would be spent with your artist-in-residence, Louise Scott, as she teaches you the basics of etching using real-life wildlife seen on site.

The Artist: Louise Scott

Louise Scott has been a full time practising wildlife artist for the past 20 years. She completed a BA Hons Degree in Fine art printmaking at Cheltenham College of Art in 1986 and then gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Countryside management at Bangor College, Wales.

She moved to Orkney in 1992 and owned the Inkstone Gallery in St Margaret’s Hope, Orkney for many years until moving to Glasgow in 2009. She has been a demonstrator of Copper plate etching at the prestigious ‘Art in Action’ fair, Waterperry House, Oxford for 3 years from 2010-12. She was also Artist in Action in 2014 at the Scottish Game Fair held at Scone Palace, Perth. Louise’s artwork has featured in a number of publications, the most recent of which was Mascot Media Ltd’s ‘The Artful Hare’ in 2015. Her work is exhibited in galleries throughout the UK.

Etching

Louise specialises in the 16th century Intaglio printing method of Etching. Etching is similar to engraving but acid is used to cut the image into the metal. The week would consist of a short talk about Louise’s work and the history of printmaking followed by a quick demonstration of inking up a plate to make a print. We would then spend a day out in the field learning to sketch from life by looking through a telescope and/or binoculars at probably Seabirds on the Orkney cliffs. One or two days would then be spent making an image on tracing paper to transfer onto a copper plate, making the etching and then printing your own small edition of original etchings.

I’m a Beginner

Louise emphasises very strongly that it is not necessary to be ‘good at art’ to take part in this week. A willingness to give things a go and see what happens is all that is needed!

Photographs

To Book (price £995 per person)

Please complete the form by using this link: http://orcadianwildlife.co.uk/wildlife-tour-bookings/orkney-archaeology-wildlife-tour-2/

Accommodation

Is at the beautiful Georgian Manse of Pentland View in the capable hands of your hosts Adam and Erica Clarkson.
